Primrose Hill Community Library Film Show presents
Garbo’s legendary silent classic
Flesh and the Devil
Starring Greta Garbo & John Gilbert
Directed by Clarence Brown
USA 1926 113 minutes
Introduced by the celebrated film historian Kevin Brownlow
Greta Garbo and John Gilbert smoulder in this high-octane romance – perhaps unsurprisingly as during filming the couple began a passionate off-screen affair as well as being lovers on set. Gilbert plays Leo, an army officer, who falls for Garbo’s beautiful Countess Felicitas. This leads to her enraged husband challenging him to a duel in which Leo kills the Count. Leo is sent to into exile as punishment and, in his absence, Felicitas marries his best friend Ulrich, whom Leo had asked to look after her. However, when Leo finally returns after three years away, friendship and desire collide in a tempestuously emotional climax.
“A film of more than passing cleverness…the theme is sheer undiluted sex, and Brown uses a series of close-ups to get this across with considerable effect.”
Paul Rotha, The Film Till Now
