Take two legendary co-stars, a rip-roaring boys’ own story, a fearless director and an eventful location shoot in Zaire and Uganda and you get The African Queen – John Huston’s classic adventure movie.

During World War One, a hard-drinking river trader (Bogart, giving an Oscar-winning performance) and a prim missionary (Hepburn) are forced to take a hazardous trip down the Congo together after her village is destroyed.   The odd companions encounter tropical hazards, nefarious German officers and surprising romance before their final confrontation with an enemy gunboat.

This romantic river epic is one of those surprising patchwork films that really work, a splendidly successful mixture of comedy, character and derring-do.
