Old Secrets Cast Long Shadows
Featuring Ralph Fiennes
Directed by Taghi Amirani
Edited by Walter Murch
UK 2021 119 minutes
While making a documentary about the 1953 CIA/MI6 coup in Iran director Taghi Amirani and editor Walter Murch discover never seen before archive material hidden for decades. The 16mm footage and documents not only allow the filmmakers to tell the story of the overthrow of the Iranian government in unprecedented detail, but it also leads to explosive revelations about dark secrets buried for 67 years.
Working with Ralph Fiennes to help bring the lost material to life, what begins as a historical documentary about four days in August 1953 turned into a live investigation, taking the filmmakers into uncharted cinematic waters. The roots of Iran’s volatile relationship with America and Britain have never been so forensically and dramatically exposed.
“A thrilling detective case . . . Ralph Fiennes appears, lending a wry Le Carré air to proceedings as an enigmatic MI6 agent with an explosive testimony. Meanwhile, the monumental morass of material is masterfully edited by Walter Murch, the Oscar-winning sound designer of Apocalypse Now, who leads viewers into a very different heart of darkness.” – The Times
“This powerful and authoritative documentary by the Iranian filmmaker Taghi Amirani is as gripping as any thriller” – The Guardian
As we are unable to show films at the Library Film Show at present, we are especially glad to feature this film by one of our existing speakers, local resident and film editor Walter Murch. We hope to be back soon with treasures from the silver screen with which to enchant and delight Library Film Show members. As usual, each film will be introduced by a local who was involved with the film’s production. What better way to celebrate the essence of Primrose Hill!
