Tuesday 4 December Film Show
PHCL Film Show presents
Garbo laughs!

Ninotchka
Starring Greta Garbo, Melvyn Douglas
Directed by Ernst Lubitsch
USA 1939   110 minutes

Nine years after her first talkie, Garbo made her comedy debut in this frothy tale of a dour Russian envoy sublimating her womanhood for Soviet brotherhood until she falls for a suave Parisian man-about-town (Melvyn Douglas). The film is an unmitigated delight.

Not only do you have Garbo sending herself up ("Do you want to be alone?" "No!"), but also a company of talented comedic actors and one of the wittiest scripts ever written.   Billy Wilder was partly responsible for that and it bristles with his edgy barbs.   “How are things in Moscow?” Garbo’s po-faced commissar is asked when she arrives in Paris. “Very good, she replies.  “The last mass trials were a great success.   There are going to be fewer but better Russians.” "At least twice a day the most dignified human being is ridiculous", the director explained about his acclaimed Lubitsch Touch. That’s how the audience sees Garbo’s lovestruck Ninotchka: serenely dignified yet endearingly ridiculous. Garbo laughs. So will you.

Doors open 7.15pm, Introduction 7.45pm, Film 8.00pm        £8.00, in cash, including a glass of wine.   Tickets, up to two per person, on sale at the Library, Sharpleshall Street, NW1 8YN (on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) or on the door.
