North Yorkshire 1992, and the miners of Grimley Colliery are up against it. Not only is their pit facing closure, but the Grimley Colliery Band is on the verge of breaking up. However, when Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald) – the daughter of a former band leader – arrives, she somehow manages to rekindle their enthusiasm for the forthcoming National Championship. Despite the threat of redundancy that hangs over them, the band plays on under the proud and passionate leadership of Danny (Pete Postlethwaite), confronting debt, decay and despair with sublimely beautiful music.
Charged with Yorkshire grit and humour, Brassed Off is a charming comedic drama that also manages to strike notes of deep emotion and heartfelt anger.
