Don’t Look Now
Starring Donald Sutherland, Julie Christie
Directed by Nicolas Roeg
UK 1973 105 minutes
While mourning the death of their young daughter, John and Laura Baxter travel to Venice where John has been commissioned to restore a church. In the eerie atmosphere of the lagoon in winter, they meet a strange pair of elderly sisters, one of whom claims to be psychic. She insists that she sees the spirit of the Baxters’ daughter, who is bringing a warning from beyond. Laura is intrigued, but John resists the idea.
However, he then seems to have psychic flashes of his own, seeing his daughter walk the alleyways in her red coat, as well as Laura and the sisters on a funeral gondola. Does he also have the gift of second sight? As John wrestles with his grief, illusion, reality and sudden terror all combine to propel Nicolas Roeg’s chilling film towards a devastating climax.
