Introduced by Deborah Moggach
We are delighted to welcome the celebrated novelist Deborah Moggach for this screening of Justin Chadwick’s 2017 historical drama based on her best-selling novel. Moggach also wrote the screenplay for the film in collaboration with Tom Stoppard.
The romantic story is set in 17th Century Amsterdam, where an orphaned girl (Alicia Vikander) is forcibly married to a rich and powerful merchant (Christoph Waltz). The “arrangement” proves unhappy, and after her husband commissions a portrait of her, she begins a passionate affair with the struggling young painter (Dane DeHaan). Seeking to escape the merchant’s grasp, the lovers risk everything and enter the frenzied tulip bulb market in the hope that the right bulb will make a fortune and buy their freedom. This lavishly mounted production features a strong ensemble cast that also includes Tom Hollander, Jack O’Connell, Cara Delevingne, David Harewood and Judi Dench.
